“With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27).
Not to contradict Jesus by any means, but there are plenty of impossibilities with God. In other words, there are plenty of things my God can’t do.
It is impossible for God to lie (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18); it is impossible for God to ignore sin (Isaiah 59:1-2; 2 Peter 3:9); it is impossible for God to tempt any person to sin (James 1:12-14).
Then, of course, there are the practical or absurd matters. God cannot make a round square. He cannot make a rock so heavy that even he can’t lift it.
But more to the point of the passage, it is not impossible for God to pardon someone who sins (in this particular case, someone whose first devotion is to wealth). That is the core and beauty of the gospel. However, it is impossible for God to pardon someone who does not recognizes his/her need to put God first.
The wealthy (then and now), often make a god of their wealth. Jesus taught that wealth more often drives one away from God, rather than to God, as in the case of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:2), and the rich young man (Matthew 19:21-23).
Yet, Jesus said, nothing is impossible with God. With men, due to stubbornness and idolatry, some things are simply made impossible.
But with God, all things are full of potential.
