What is the most important commandment of God in the Bible?

With all your mind

The lawyers of Jesus day, men trained in the text of the Old Testament, sent one of their own to ask the Lord that very question. Opinions differed. Some thought sacrifice was the most important of God’s commandments. Others thought there were so many commandments it was impossible to determine which was most important.

Jesus said, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength (Mark 12:30).

Let’s focus on just one of those phrases: “with all your mind.” How do I love God with my mind?  The Lord Jesus included this as a part of what he knew to be the “greatest commandment.” Since it held such an important place in the Lord Jesus’ thoughts it ought to hold a similarly great place in ours, shouldn’t it?

If we are to love God with all of our minds, how can we allow other things to take precedence? Yet, every day there are rather mundane things that attempt to displace God from the position of significance he should have. God must be uppermost in our minds or we cannot love him as we are commanded.

Additionally, do we love God with all of our minds and yet refuse to study God’s word? King David wrote by the inspiration of God, “O how I love your law! All day long I meditate on it (Psalm 119:98 NET). The king also wrote, “whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours,” (Psalm 63:6 NET). David thought about God all day each day.

Can the same be said of you? Or does the world force God from your mind with its constant diversions and problems?

Do you really love God with all your mind?
