Will you step out of your boat?

The disciples in Matthew 14:22-33 had it pretty good. Earlier, their Savior had fed over 5,000 people with two fish and five loaves of bread. But soon, fear had them in its grips again.

Out of all the men in that wave-beaten boat, only one had the courage to step out on the sea. Peter didn’t hesitate to go to Jesus. Some may say that he acted before he thought. However, I like to think that he trusted Jesus so deeply that worry left him and made stepping out possible.

Sadly, it’s not always as easy for us.

We’re accustomed to the boat. It’s routine. It may be a little rocky at times, but it offers a mock assurance. It tells us that we’re safe by staying where we are. It whispers that no one else has the difficulties that we have. It feeds our fears and insecurities.

But the best adventures come when we quit listening to the lies of the world and come to Jesus. Like Peter, God gives us many opportunities to get out of the boat and walk on the water.

It’s time to step out:

Initiate a Bible study.

Pray with someone.

Speak up when everyone else is silent.

Be kind.

Teach a Bible class.

Increase your giving.

Protect your marriage.

Be the parent your children deserve.

Go that extra mile.

Say, “No” when the world says “Yes” and say, “Yes” when the world says “No”.

Trust God completely.

Moving beyond the comfort of your boat will be terrifying, but take courage, he is reliable. God won’t let you down.

Take a deep breath, say a little prayer, and step out. Don’t worry. Jesus will meet you there.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)
