“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man, that walketh to direct his steps.” Jeremiah 10:23

The things we chase in life! We are chasing sports, cars, houses, money, prestige, prizes, degrees, jobs, and in the process America is failing, for she has forgotten God. We have broken homes, broken promises, broken dreams, broken children. ….and somehow we believe that all will be well. Sooo, we wait once more for an election, thinking “man” will take care of everything. The answers to America’s woes are not going to be found in Washington D. C. The answers are found within the pages of God’s Word and applying that Word to our lives, our homes, our state and our nation.

“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man, that walketh to direct his steps.” Jeremiah 10:23

“Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near: . . . .” Isaiah 55:6

We are chasing an illusion. America is trying her best to find happiness in “things”, but in the process losing that which has great value in the sight of God. You can’t buy those values in a store. They have to be read, studied and taught from God’s Word, not only for ourselves, but our children, and lived out in our daily lives. Character once built our homes. Character is gained by many thoughts, and many deeds, not one. Character is what we are in the dark, and if we aren’t abiding by His Word, a corrupt nation is the end result. “As the home goes, so goes the nation.”

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

I read this morning that among adults 73% once believed in God. That figure is down 12%. 61% currently believe in God. This fact should scare every American. We are losing our nation right under our noses, and allowing evil to take over. We have minored in majors and majored in minors. In its place we have voted selfishly, and allowed corrupt men, promising “things, money” to rule the nation. We now have a corrupt White House, a corrupt government, corrupt universities, corrupt schools, a corrupt United States Supreme Court oppressing our lives. God warned us in Scripture, and we ignored Him. We are now facing the consequences of those of immoral choices…..and make no mistake, there is a consequence for every choice we make.

“Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.” Haggai 1:6-7

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalms 11:3

“For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.” Hosea 8:7

Though the following quote was written about the author’s grandmother, I thought of America immediately when I read it.
“It’s not that I cry over deviled eggs, themselves, They trigger a memory hard to live with, even after all this time. As my people would say, “some things just stand for things.”

And three or four of the best cooks on this earth brought deviled eggs, speckled with black pepper or cayenne. It was the only time we had them, and so they always make me, as foolish as it is, and as I am, a little sad.

It is not just that I miss her. She has been gone for decades now. It is the fact that, as she failed, I rarely went to see her. I lived from a duffel bag, always moving. I chased selfish things, chased prizes, that, now, shine no more than the folded-up pieces of a Juicy Fruit wrapper that the old woman used to hide, like jewels, in her room. Things stand for things.” Rick Bragg

One thought on ““O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man, that walketh to direct his steps.” Jeremiah 10:23

  1. The title reminds me of a conversation my husband had with a church member many years ago. In the context of man’s inability to make himself “upright” (erect his steps) before the Lord, my husband quoted Jeremiah 10:23. The member responded sarcastically, “NaH! Don’t give me that!”

He was so adamant that scripture was not true, that he completely missed the fact it was quoted and not paraphrased. Unfortunately, many today are willing to contradict God when they do not understand what they read.
