“SUNSHINE AND SHADOWS” – LESSON 1 Biblical Homes

Every Tuesday you should see a post dedicated to “Biblical Homes.”  These articles will typically be done by Eileen Light, but guest authors may also be used for these devotionals.

Many women are familiar with the name “Log Cabin Quilt.”   There are many variations of the quilt, and when finished, are stunning to view.  I don’t know if you are aware of the history behind the quilt, but the center of this quilt starts with the traditional red square, signifying the “heart of the home.”  God being the Heart, or the Anchor.

Sometimes the quilt has a yellow square which is also an anchor for the surrounding strips.  This color signifies “welcome home.”   I have made of of these quilt, all hand pieced and hand quilted, for I am very much traditional in all things.  I love hand piecing and quilting, but m:ost are done by machine now, which in my view takes away from the individuality of the quilt.  I have a miniature log cabin in my possession made by hand as well.

“She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.”   Proverbs 31:27

“She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.  She is like the merchants’ ships, she bringeth her food from afar.”  Proverbs 31:13-14

“Strength and honour are her clothing;  and she shall rejoice in time to come.  She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”
Proverbs 31:25-26

“But however fleeting and changeable life may appear to be on the surface, we know that the great underlying values of life are always the same; no different today than they
were a thousand years ago.”         ~ Wilder

“The true way to live, is to enjoy every moment as it passes, and surely it is in the everyday things around us that the beauty of life lies.”    ~ Wilder

The strips around these log cabin quilts are made form dark and light fabrics.  Half of the block is in a dark fabric, signifying the sorrows in life, and the light side represents the more joyful times in a family’s life.

A home is a haven for the family.  A place where we can go to escape the world and its trials and tribulations.  A place where children are nurtured and taught His Word.  Where true love, order, peace, and comfort reside.  We take many things in this life for granted, but God and the home should never be one of them.  May we return to the order of the home as He has designed.

“And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him;  and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”   Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

“Forever, O Lord, Thy Word is settled in heaven.”  Psalms 119:89

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.  They are new every morning:  great is Thy faithfulness.”   Lamentations 3:2-23

“For Thou has been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones  as a storm against the wall.”   Isaiah 25:4

Many women in our nation believe home is a drudgery, and seek fulfillment outside the home……but they are so wrong.  What could be more fulfilling than to make their home a haven for their husbands and children, with God at the center.

Two institutions God designed and it is the church and the home.  Children I see on a daily basis would love for their mothers to be home waiting for them when they return from school, but more often than not, it is not the case.  We worry about our nation as a whole, and see many troubles within its borders, but if the homes were intact, the nation would be as well.

Home is one of the sweetest words on earth.  Earthly homes where we are loved, cared for, nurtured and led in paths of righteousness, for it is in the home children should learn early on the precepts and promises of God, and to teach them how to get from this earthly home to our spiritual home.

“Godly womanhood. . . the very phrase sounds strange in our ears.  We never hear it now.  We hear about every other type women:  beautiful women, smart women, sophisticated women, career women, talented women, divorced women.  But so seldom do we hear of a Godly woman – or of a Godly man either,  for that matter.  We believe women come nearer to fulfilling their God given function in the home than anywhere else.  It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife than to be Miss America.  It is a greater achievement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second-rate novel filled with filth.  It is a far, far better thing in the realms of morals to be old-fashioned, than to be ultra-modern.  The world has enough women who know how to be smart.  It needs women who are willing to be simple.  The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant…. It needs some who will be brave.  The world has enough women who are popular.  It needs more who are pure.  We need women, and men, too, who would rather be morally right than socially correct.”      ~  Unknown

  1. I believe it is significant that Thornton Wilder’s first novel, MY DESTINATION IS HEAVEN, was not a success. Even though our nation as a whole was living during the Great Depression, nobody seemed to be focused on eternity. Or maybe the ones who were disagreed with his understanding.

Wilder revealed his faith in the stability and constancy of life through his depiction and discussion of the small town of Grover’s Corners, with its “marrying . . . living and . . . dying.”

One of his characters in the play OUR TOWN says this:
“People are meant to go through life two by two. Tain’t natural to be lonesome.”

When searching the scriptures, we find that to be true. Rarely is there a good Bible character who does not marry—the Apostle Paul being one exception. He says of his situation that it was a “gift” that he not lead about a wife (1 Cor. 7:7) and in 1 Corinthians 9:3-5 he shows his choice not to be married was directly related to his work as a servant of God.

As we see in the following passage, men and women are blessed to have homes and family. “Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord” (Psalm 128:3-4).

I am looking forward to this series.

  2. “We believe women come nearer to fulfilling their God given function in the home than anywhere else. It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife than to be Miss America. It is a greater achievement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second-rate novel filled with filth.”

Amen. Thank you for the article.

I hope to be a helpmeet to my future husband. I am working outside and also praying to be married asap if it is His will. To be honest, I am really confused sometimes if what I am doing now can help my husband and children. Will my man need my work to meet the financial need one day? What can I do to help lessen the burden of my man?

    • Thank you Beth for your beautiful comment. I appreciate you very much, your writing ability and knowledge of Scripture and how to apply that knowledge. You are very kind!

    • You are welcome Joyce for the article. It would be best if you and your fiance worked on these questions before marriage. Marriage is for life and much too important to leave matters to chance, and then become disenchanted with one another and embittered. God must be at the center of the marriage, both of you headed in the same direction, heaven. Better to know now than later each others expectations, and beliefs……
