MY IDEAL

An unobtrusive strength is hers,

An ever-pleasant, cheerful smile,

An uncomplaining attitude

No matter what the trial.

A strong and sturdy calm she has,

Resourcefulness and competence,

And evenness of temperament

In any circumstance.

Her hands are rough and worn from work,

But every job is always done;

She’s meek enough for any task,

And faithful as the sun.

Compassionate and merciful,

She’s quick to hear and slow to speak,

With loving words of strength to all

Faint-hearted, sad, and weak.

An inner beauty shines from her,

A purity of mind and heart,

A single-minded zeal to seek

That “good and better part.”

And like a robe of royalty,

Her gentleness of deed and word

Enrobes her manner gracefully;

She’s quiet but assured.

Impossible to be provoked,

Her peacefulness is undisturbed,

And those around her rarely see

Her countenance perturbed.

To them without she shines a light,

A separate stranger to them all,

But always joyful, friendly, sweet –

Becoming to her call.

In looks she’s not a beauty queen,

But always clean and neat and trim,

Unusual for her modesty,

Yet discreetly blended in.

She spends each moment carefully,

While judging how to use them best;

Beginning when the sun comes up,

By labor earns her rest.

To her each task’s an exercise

That helps her grow to be like Christ,

And each day is a priceless chance

To strengthen heart and mind.

Companion to each lonely soul,

She’s nurse to every ailing friend,

A blessing of the sort few find –

A servant of all men.
