Religion teaches man to depend on God and himself, while beggary teaches him to depend on the handouts of others

God takes care of His own.  Throughout Scripture the principle of trusting in God is prevalent.  Those who have been cleansed from their sins by burial in water (Acts 2:38) to arise and walk in a new life (Rom. 6:1-4) know of God’s care and love.

When we do our part and obey God’s commands, He will see to it we have those things which are necessary to us (compare Mt. 7-8).  Food and raiment yes (Mt. 6:31-34), but beyond these basic needs, He provides abundantly—more more than we ask.  It is up to us to trust in Him to provide.  May we never murmur nor complain, but be ever grateful to Him for our innumerable daily blessings.

“Now to Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.  Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5)

“And they that know Thy name will put their trust in Thee:  for Thou, Lord hast not forsaken them that see Thee.”   (Psalms 9:10)

“He shall not be afraid of evil tidings:  his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.”    (Psalms 112:7)

“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” ( Psalm 37:25)

“I have been young, and now am old.  This is a solemn place in life.  The journey on earth is almost ended.  Here is an old man who through the years has seen the plan of God bless man.  Experience has taught him much.  In fact, he had to live a long time just to learn how to live – to live in more trust, peace and expectation.  This is one of the good things about age – experience.  The years teach what you could never master in youth from books.

Now what was the specific lesson the psalmist had learned from the passing years?  That religion is an advantage to man;  that God’s wings of protection are not withdrawn from His children;  that even in material matters the people of God are more consistently  blessed than aliens;  and that he had not seen the children of the godly begging bread.

It is an economic fact that the religion of God blesses materially as well as spiritually.  It teaches industry, prudence and thrift, and promises the care of God for His own.  Begging is usually the result of a course contrary to the Scriptures.  It is ordinarily brought on by extreme misconduct.  Religion teaches man to depend on God and himself, while beggary teaches him to depend on the handouts of others.”  ~ Leroy Brownlow
