The Choices I Make

Every day of my life I make choices: some small, some big. Each of those choices has an impact on who I am today and who I will become tomorrow. If I make the same decisions, then in five years, ten years, or more I will be the same person I am today, following the same path, wherever that path is leading.

But what if I decide today that I want to be or to do something different in my life? Something more? What if I set goals for myself and resolve every day to make choices based on reaching those goals? Maybe it would be about getting in better shape or losing weight. Then each choice I make about what to eat or how often to exercise will have an impact on my success. Maybe it is related to business, or education, or personal growth. Whatever it is each choice must be in line with the end result I want to see for me to reach that goal.

But just what if we made our spiritual choices that way? I have been fascinated this month with one particular chapter in the book of Psalms. In this chapter David mentioned his own choices several times and what he purposed in his heart to decide.

In Psalm 119, David expressed feelings of making choices that would lead him into a closer relationship with God and to following His law.

“I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me.” Psalm 119:30

David looked at his options, laid out God’s judgments before him, and chose the way of truth. Do we handle decisions that way? Do we lay them out alongside God’s word and pick the one that will keep us walking in His light? Each choice we make could hold the possibility of taking us off course in our walk toward salvation, and we must consider our choices for living so that we do not allow that to happen.

“I thought about my ways, And turned my feet to Your testimonies.” Psalm 119:59

David thought about his ways, how he wanted to go, what he wanted to do, and he chose to turn himself toward God’s word. He recognized that God’s ways were what would lead him to the safety of greener pastures (Psalm 23) and he lived to that end.

“My life is continually in my hand, Yet I do not forget Your law.” Psalm 119:109

Every day, continually, his life was in his hand to choose what to do with it. He chose not to forget the law of God. Likewise, every day, it is our choice what to do with our lives. It is my choice if I am going to do the things God has asked me, or if I am going to choose to do things my way. Each choice I make will lead me somewhere. Where will your choices lead you today?
