A New Year’s Psalm

I was quite surprised and unaware the following Psalms was ever called a New Year’s Psalm, but it is my prayer you have the same prayer yourself as we enter the New Year 2017.

“I will lift up mine yes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.  He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:  He that keepeth thee will not slumber.  Behold, He that keepth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.  The Lord is my keeper:  the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.  The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.  The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil:  He shall preserve thy soul.  The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”    (Psalms 121)

“We have given the Psalm in its completeness.  It is one of blessed comfort and striking consolation.  The author lifts up his eyes to the hills in anticipation of help.  He finds confidence in the singular truth that God never sleeps; that He always watches over, cares for and protects His children “from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

It has been called a New Year’s Psalm.  For whatever occasion the Psalm may have been written, it is well suited to New Year’s thoughts, for daily meditation or for an circumstance.

The future is too uncertain not to have the assurance of which the Psalm so beautifully speaks;  for one thing we struggling creatures need is help.”    ~ Leroy Brownlow

Isn’t this the way we all are?  Uncertain about the future, fretful, fearful and lacking trust in Him to help us through each day.  Relying more on ourselves, political leaders, self-help books, or others, than Him.

With God’s help we can face the future knowing, that if we are faithful to Him, He will hear our cries for help and will comfort, lift our burdens and show us the way.  I know it’s true, for each day He gives me strength and comfort to face whatever comes my way but it is imperative we be on a speaking basis with Him. The trials and tribulations of daily life can be very stressful if we do not go to Him in prayer for help and for comfort.  Many times I become upset, anxious about situations or circumstances, and it is then I stop everything and go to Him in prayer.  It is there I can relieve the burden, knowing He will help me through them.  And He does.  And He does………..

God be with all of you in this coming New Year and may you know as well:  “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”       (Philippians 4:7)

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you:  not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”      (John 14:27)
