BIBLICAL HOMES: “Just a Number”

While getting a new ID tag the other day, it dawned on me I am reduced to a number.  We have Social Security, Drivers License, Registration of vehicle, Insurance (all kinds), Tax numbers, License plate numbers, Cell phone numbers, the list is endless.  And as I thought about this.  I wanted to reach out and tell them, “I do have a name.”  Unsure if anyone else feels this way, but I do.  I would like to be more than someone other than a number who is passed over.  Overlooked.  I understand why they have numbers, because some people have the same name but are two different people.  But still . . . .one does want to be viewed as a person with a name.

I remember being called to Jury duty every six months, Juror number . . . .   This went on for about three years.  I asked others if they were called to jury duty this many times and many would tell me they had never been called.  A member of the church who was on the Grand Jury helped me find the reason.  It came down to an initial in my name on the voting records.  I spelled my middle name on one and placed an initial on the other and therefore they believed I was two different people.  The problem was corrected, but I did have jury duty last year in a new county.  It is difficult to understand why they continue to draw my name or Juror number,  but they do.

I’m very grateful God knows my name.  My name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.  It’s very comforting to know my name is written there, and I really hadn’t thought of it until now.  I won’t be a number, but a name.  What a glorious thought, He knows my name and everything about me, from what makes me cry, to what makes me joyful and everything in between.  In fact,  He knows everything about all of His faithful children and their names too are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

“And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the Gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow labourers, whose names are in the Book of Life.  Rejoice in the Lord always:  and again I say, Rejoice.”     Philippians 4:3-4

“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie:  but they which are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”     Revelation 21:27

“But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and He that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not:  for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name;  thou art Mine.”    Isaiah 43:1

“I Am the Good Shepherd, and know My sheep, and Am  known of mine.  As the Father knoweth Me, even so know I the Father:  and I lay down My life for the sheep.”    John  10:14-15

“To him the porter openeth;  and the sheep hear His voice:  and He calleth His own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.”   John 10:3

“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;  and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”    Jeremiah 1:5

“Because He hath set His love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:  I will set Him on high, because He hath known my name.”   Psalms 91:14

“Listen, O isles, unto me;  and hearken, ye people, from far;  The Lord hath called me from the womb;  from the bowels of my mother hath He made mention of my name.”    Isaiah 49:1

“And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken:  for thou hast found grace in My sight, and I know thee by name.”    Exodus 33:17

I never realized how many times inspired Scriptures tell us of God knowing our names until having written this lesson.  And my prayer is you too will be obedient to Him that your name may also be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

“He telleth the number of the stars;  He calleth them all by their names.”    Psalms 147:4

“But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not therefore:  ye are of more value than many sparrows.”     Luke 12:7
