God’s Seasonal Beauty

Last evening while enjoying a cup of coffee, I looked out to my west and saw the most glorious sunset.  I believe autumn has to be one of the most beautiful seasons of the year.  The horizon was ablaze with tangerine, fading into shades of gold, yellow and a pale yellow, melting into a bright blue and finally fading into a pale blue sky.  Trees with their colorful and leafy silhouettes accented the scene perfectly.  A beautiful green hay meadow stretched out before me with many Angus cattle grazing lazily as birds winged their way to their roost.  I heard an owl right outside my window.  He sits in the huge sycamore tree in my front yard, and sometimes he changes trees and sits in the Catalpa tree outside my bedroom window.  I hear him every fall.  This summer, though, we have had no rain since June, the pastures have remained green.  God’s provision for us and for all His creation.

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, creeping  thing, and beast of the earth after his kind:  and it was so.  And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind:  and God saw that it was good.”     Genesis 1:22-24

Each time I watch the promise of a new day, or the closing in of the evening, the thought always crosses my mind, please, Father, freeze the moment.  I never want to let it go, but, the scene changes second by second until evening swallows the day, and if one does not pause to see God’s magnificent beauty, you will miss it, and its always different from day to day, morning by morning, second by second.

“The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.  The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.”      Ecclesiastes 1:5-6

By the middle of November the leaves had their final blush and fallen softly to the ground.  God paints the daily sky.  It is always changing, from the horizon, to the field, to the trees and flowers.  All slows down to prepare for winter, a season which also has its own unique beauty.

“Neither say they in their heart.  Let us now fear the Lord our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season.  He reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.”     Jeremiah  5:24

We don’t get much snow in Texas, for the conditions have to be just right, but we have had our share of ice.  Last year we had ice, and early in the morning, when the sky cleared, and the warmth of the sun’s rays shone forth, the trees that were covered in ice, glistened, sparkled and shone as diamonds.  It appeared as a fairy tale wonderland, and just as quickly, the ice melted, and I was once again blessed to have seen such beauty………..and it costs nothing to see the beauty of God’s handiwork, and to thrill at His majesty, and to thank Him for all of His bountiful blessings in this life.  All there for us to see, “if” we pause and take notice.

“There is a harmony in Autumn,
and a lustre in its sky.
Which through the summer is not heard or seen.
As if it could not be, as if it had not been!”
