Plants need minerals. Calcium is one important soil component.
My mother used to put eggshells and coffee grounds on her roses. They loved it! Irises also thrive on the minerals in this natural fertilizer. Extra calcium in the soil can prevent blossom-end rot on peppers and tomatoes. It takes a long time to break down for the calcium to be bio-available, so breaking the shells into smaller pieces speeds that process.
By the time the eggshells reach the soil, they are usually crushed pretty well. If they weren’t done on purpose to make their valuable nutrients more attainable, these fragile half-orbs are crushed by the weight of the other compost ingredients.
That’s okay in a garden, but have you ever felt like you were walking on eggshells when dealing with people? Holidays may be especially harrowing, given the amount of time spent with friends, family, and coworkers. Add to that a component of time crunch, and it could turn volatile.
A casual comment could be taken the wrong way….or the way it was intended, which could be worse. A feeling of trepidation could cause an accidental stumbling misspoken comment rather than a careful parsing of words.
Either way, we watch our steps with much more dread than we would like.
God tells us how to walk in every circumstance, and these “eggshell moments” are even more worthy of our attention. Here are some ways to navigate the eggshells of social interactions.
First, walk in love.
“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks” (Ephesians 5:1-5, NKJV).
Second, walk in light. As the light of the sun starts coming back as longer days, be the light that the world needs and even craves.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says:
‘Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light’” (Ephesians 5:8-14).
Third, walk in wisdom; not under the influence of substances, but under the influence of the Spirit.
“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:15-20).
It is said that you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. If we follow these words of advice from Ephesians 5, we will lessen the likelihood of damage.
