KNOWING GOD

  • 1 John 2:4-5—He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
  • 2 Peter 1:5-9–And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins

Knowing God and Jesus requires BEING like them, which causes us to WALK (behave) like them.

So what is the knowledge of God?

  • 1 John 5:20—And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life
  • 2 Peter 1:8—Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 1 John 2:3-5—And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected:hereby know we that we are in him.
  • 1 John 3:5-6—And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
  • 1 John 4:6-8—We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
  • 1 John 3:1—Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

The terms “know God” and “abide in God” are used in close association, if not interchangeably.

  • 1 John 2:4-6—He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

    DEAR DEBRA,

We always appreciate feedback and thank you for taking the time to make this point. There are multiple Bible translations to choose from (some are more accurate than others), and we have chosen some of the more established ones because they are easily accessed by most people and they offer proven reliability. We know this may require a little extra effort on the part of readers and we appreciate your effort to dig into God’s word.

  2. Actually, we have been sold a bill of goods by those who want to destroy the KJV and its deeper truths. If we applied a readability test to it like we do a chemistry book or a math book, we find the KJV is written on a 5th grade level, while our chemistry books are written above the 12th grade level even when used in the lower grades in school.

The KJV is not totally accurate in several places, but if one is willing to struggle with it, the majority of the translation work is more accurate than any others. Modern versions take so many liberties and mislead the reader into thinking the wrong thing. Maybe this would be a good topic to study in depth. It would/could be for our good and for posterity too.

Sorry to write again on the same topic, but it just occurred to me that there was a poem in the archives that addressed this topic.
