Life’s been known to resemble a roller coaster

I’m not big on roller-coasters. So when the Disney park employee grinned and commented, “Last chance to chicken out,” I nearly took him up on the offer.

However, I knew there was no way out, because my youngest daughter was sitting in the seat next to me and had looked forward to the ride the entire day. I wasn’t about to disappoint her.

That coaster went from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds. I quickly grabbed her and pulled her close to me, determined not to let go.

In the middle of our high speed journey, I snuck a quick look only to discover that we were upside down. When it finally came to a stop, I’ll never forget the look of fright on my eight year-old’s face. Nor will I forget her words, “That was great! Let’s do it again!”

Life’s been known to resemble a roller coaster. Twists and turns happen so quickly that we may be afraid to see what happens next.

The loss of a loved one, either by death or divorce, the termination of a job and the insurance that comes with it, even the decisions made by our teen and adult children can yank us so quickly in an unknown direction, that it can make our stomach turn. There are times when we may look out and realize that our lives are completely upside down.

However, just as my daughter knew that she was safe in her mother’s arms, we too are safe in the arms of our father. He holds us in place when our life seems to be speeding out of control. His fierce embrace will never fail. He guides our path even when we’re too afraid to look.

Life may be a roller coaster ride but that doesn’t mean that we have to grasp on to the craziness of each day. Hold tightly to Jesus. Find peace in the fact that God will direct your way and even though it may be frightening at times, find joy in the ride.

You’re safe in his arms.

*Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you” (Isaiah 41:10 ESV).
