“Comfort Zone” I was reading an article on social media this morning, and the article made me think of this term regarding Christians. You can see what influence these terms have on Christians, for they start using these terms in their language too, along with the ideas.
“For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?”
I Corinthians 14:8
I have heard this bandied about for awhile throughout the media, but I have never liked the term. Perhaps because liberals over work the word/words so much. There is a shopping cart mentality regarding some Christians. The scenario plays out somewhat like this. A new couple starts attending the congregation with their children, and before long they are asking about various programs that the congregation has to offer their children. A shopping list of entertainment is usually what they are looking for, picking and choosing at will for their children. What kinds of programs are offered. How many times per week will they be offered, (after all, the children need interaction with other children), and then, if the congregation does not offer all manner of programs/entertainment for the children, the couple leaves in search for another.
“And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4
I remember a brother in Christ, a preacher, telling me that they had a small congregation in Tennessee and that young couples new to town would stop by and visit with the congregation, but just as quickly leave. When I asked him why, he told me the couples wanted “fun and games” for their children. They were looking for everything but Truth. Unsure now if the congregation is still there, and since then the preacher has died.
It should be top priority for young couples to desire first that a congregation be sound in the faith with sound elders, sound preacher and sound deacons. We have no time for anything but the Truth and children need a sound, and nutritious diet when it comes to God’s Word. Play time with other children, if the congregation does not have young people their age, can be arranged at home where it is intended, but teaching God’s Word is top priority. We have drifted brethren from growth with Truth, to gimmicks and non-growth. In research for this article I found that “nones” was the fastest growing religious body in America, meaning the non-religiously affiliated. Completely indifferent to religion.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7
“And when He was 12 years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing Him to be been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found Him not, the turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking Him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.” Luke 2:42-47
“If you look for Truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or Truth, only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”
Eileen Light
You have said a mouthful.
I know of one congregation near you that now only has TWO little pre-school children because the parents of the others have gone to seek fun and games. 😮
