Pray for US

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34, ASV).

“We ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained; and since the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered as deeply, perhaps finally, staked on the experiment…”

The above was what George Washington said during his Inaugural Address to both houses of Congress on April 30, 1789.  Fellow Christians, no words can be truer than those spoken by our first President. Our country is in deep trouble with God. We have disregarded the eternal rules of order and right given by God. From top government officials, to leaders in businesses, churches, schools, and families, we have failed to meet God’s standards.

No greater plea can be made than what Paul said in 1 Thess. 5:25: “Brethren, pray for us.” Pray that our leaders will turn back to God and pass laws that are His will. Pray that they will consider the humanity all over the world that yearns for just rulers who will do what is right before God and the people. Pray that church leaders will turn to God’s Word and follow it. Pray that fathers and mothers will teach their children God’s commandments and set the example for their children to follow God.

Our country, our people, our leaders are a reproach to God because of sin. We can help change the status quo. The Bible doesn’t call for us to demonstrate, to march against the government, to write defamatory essays and publish them. On the contrary, the Bible says we should honor and obey our rulers (Romans 13:1-7). It calls for supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving to be made for kings and all that are in high places (1 Timothy 2:2). Let’s make today and every day a day of prayer for our country.

Hymn: “God Bless America”

Prayer: Father, Like Noah and the prophets of old, I confess that our nation is in deep need of Your forgiveness and help. May we turn to you and obey Your will. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
