Last week as I walked in the door a co-worker asked why I no longer visited with other co-workers. I told him that I did not care to hear the profanity, and that if I stayed around it long enough I would be doing the same. “Be not deceived..” It is increasingly harder to stay away from profanity and those that speak in a vulgar manner. The taking of God’s name in vain is done so casually now, and cursing has become a part of everyday language. It is now prevalent among women as well as young people. I have heard 1st graders cursing. God warns us about profanity in Scripture.
“But shun profane and vain babbling: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.” II Timothy 2:16
…and that is the case. Profanity increases unto more ungodliness. We become lax in our speech from listening to music, movies, magazines and influences by those around us, and it isn’t too long before we are wanting to do those things that are unbecoming of a Christian, and certainly not a good example to set before the world. I have found too that those that participate in profanity do as Scripture warns us about. They usually are involved in drinking, bars, parties, and drugs. If we begin to love being around evil it will love us, but when we shun evil, it will shun us.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” James 4:7-8
“Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”
Romans 12:9
When we speak let our speech come from a mind that is filled with God’s Word, good things, noble things, and not from an empty head that does not think. If our speech is not worth more than our silence, it would be far better to remain silent.
Our personal behavior is the pillar of society and our society is only as strong as her people, and what we speak says volumes about our society. Let it not be ruined by the actions and speech of her people.
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.”
Proverbs 23:7
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Matthew 12:34
“Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.” Proverbs 4:23-24
Let us be admonished as Scripture teaches about speech.
“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” Colossians 4:6
“Well in my judgment, they have not accomplished anything! A group of scientists in Cambridge,England, have produced a cross between a sheep and a goat. You guessed it – they named this poor creature “Geep.” It looks like a goat with long hair, cannot reproduce itself, and mingles and hobnobs with both sheep and goats. Being a cross, it doesn’t know where it belongs.
What an unfortunate predicament!
Many people in the world, however, should be quite pleased with this freak, because it represents exactly their view of religion. Not all out for God and not all out for Satan. A cross between the two. They want to be “geeps,” half goat and half sheep.” ~Leroy Brownlow
