Say what you will, it is easy to see the practicality of: ‘Thou shalt not kill’; ‘Thou shalt not steal’; ‘ Thou shalt not bear false witness’; ‘Honor thy father and thy mother’; and all other moral directives. They are as relevant today as yesterday, and shall be as urgent tomorrow.”

In a world where standards of right and wrong are shifting beneath our feet as sand, God’s Word stands.

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.”     Matthew 24:35

My friend called yesterday and was deeply upset about the changes he has seen through his 88 years.  He told me he never had to do the things he is having to do to protect his possessions.  He has put up many barriers since the burglary.  Not just one burglary, but two within a week.  This was about to make him cry.  He was telling me of a time when one could leave his doors open to the house, possessions left in the open, and no one would steal them.  He grew up in the depression, and people helped one another.  They had faith in God, but sadly times have changed.  The more affluent we have become, the less we have trusted in Him; now many trust in themselves.

“Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.  Right is right even if no one is doing it.”        ~ Unknown

“The real things haven’t changed.  It is still best to be honest and truthful;
to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures;
and have courage when things go wrong.”       ~  Laura Ingalls Wilder

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom:  and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”    Proverbs 9:10

Whether mankind likes it or not, truth still stands.  We will all give an account for what we have done in this life, whether it be evil or good.

“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”      Ecclesiastes 12:14

“Rejoice, O young man in thy youth:  and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the light of thine eyes:  but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.”      Ecclesiastes 11:9

I reminded my friend how even if others do us wrongly, we must continue to do right.  Prayerfully, the thieves will do what is right.  If not, they will one day give an account of all the deeds they have done on earth.  It is still up to my friend / the rest of us to do what is right, even if it costs us material wealth, the loss of friends, family, or something else.  Our Lord will not forsake us; He understands all that happens to us in this life.

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. ”     Hebrews 4:15

“His commandments (except in some rites and ceremonies) have not changed.  His moral injunctions have withstood the testing of time.  The frustrations and defects of humanity have not relegated them to a place of irrelevancy.  The more defeats men suffer the more convinced they become that they need to get back to a ‘Thus saith the Lord.’  Laid low by imperfect, human views, they see the need of society’s adhering to a sure and workable standard, lest we turn mad and destroy ourselves.

His regulations have been the bread of life, the pilgrim’s staff, the mariner’s compass and the soldier’s sword.  They have fed us.  They have steadied us.  They have directed us.  They have defended us.

Say what you will, it is easy to see the practicality of:  ‘Thou shalt not kill’; ‘Thou shalt not steal’; ‘ Thou shalt not bear false witness’;  ‘Honor thy father and thy mother’; and all other moral directives.  They are as relevant today as yesterday, and shall be as urgent tomorrow.”       ~ Leroy Brownlow
