Time goes by so fast. Nothin’ can outrun it

“Time flies, while you save it all up, but someday, this will all be dust. It’s all just stuff, it ain’t never enough. You can’t take it with you so you might as well just let it go.” George Strait

“Where as ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” James 4:14

I thought of this verse today when I heard of an acquaintance of mine that is in the hospital. The last I heard she was in serious condition. This story is one I hear of so often, and the saddest part, she isn’t a Christian. She didn’t want a Bible study. She believed what she believed and no one was going to change that belief. She said to me, “I don’t need that.” She is much older than I, and I guess she thought I didn’t know what I was talking about or so it seemed to me at the time. She is one of those people that has “stuff” everywhere, and just keeps buying. A beautiful home, but that is only temporary, just as with the rest of us. We may at any moment be asked to vacate…and then the judgment.

I heard a quote in a movie once, and it stayed with me, “Humans die, and if he’s got money he buys and buys and buys and I think the reason he buys everything he can buy is that in the back of his mind he has the crazy hope that one of his purchases will be life everlasting! Which it never can be.”

Scripture teaches, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” Psalms 90:10

We also read in Luke 12:15, “And He said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

Though we need material things for this physical life, they should never come before spiritual and eternal matters. “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Matthew 6:24

“Time goes by so fast. Nothin’ can outrun it. Death commences too early – almost before you are half acquainted with life – you meet the other.”
