Love, a fruit of the Spirit

Love

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor 13:13).

Have you ever wondered why love trumps faith and hope? I have. I mean faith is pretty important. And hope. It seems pretty necessary. Why does love surpass them?

Because faith and hope are bound to earth. They will end, but love is eternal. When we get to heaven we will see all of the unseen, we will have no need to believe in the invisible world because we will be there. Our faith will be made sight.

Our hope will be made complete. We will be living all the things we were hoping for. We will have no need to hope for anything else.

But love, that will last forever. “God’s love endures forever” (Ps. 100:5).
Jesus told a law-keeping, Jewish audience, that there were now two laws. Love God with all that you are. Love other people with all that can.

When we love God with every drop of ourselves that love fills us so full that it spills out. That love touches other people who are broken, hurting and neglected. That love provides refuge in the storm and lavishes grace on those who feel lonely and unlovable.

That love is a fruit of the Spirit. That love endures forever.

“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them” (1 John 4:16).
