Nevertheless

Ninety-seven times the expression “nevertheless” is used in Scripture.  Our Father is definitely a “nevertheless” God.  I have used the expression many times in conversing with others about God’s Word, but never thought of having a lesson about the word “nevertheless.”  The short definition according to Strong’s Concordance is:  However and the word origin is (Aramaic) and of uncertain derivation.

“Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee:  behold, Mine Angel shall go before thee:  nevertheless in the day upon them.”
Exodus 32:34

“Nevertheless the Lord thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the Lord thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the Lord thy God loved thee.”   Deuteronomy 23:5

“Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt:  but I wholly followed the Lord my God.”    Joshua 14:8

“Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.”        Judges 2:16″

“And He went a little further, and fell on His face, and prayed saying, O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me:  nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.”
Matthew 26:39

“Jesus saith unto him,  Thou as said:  nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”        Matthew 26:64

“And He said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto Thee; take away this cup from Me:  nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.”    Mark 14:36

“I tell you that He will avenge them speedily.  Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? ”    Luke 18:8

“Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.”
Ezekiel 3:21

“The ‘nevertheless’ of God’s mercy is the theme of the whole Psalm.  They were in dire and constant need of mercy because their sins were so grievous and numerous.

They “were brought low for their iniquity.”  Sin is very degrading.  There is nothing elevating about it.

What had they done?   Here is a list of their transgressions:  fear at the Red Sea, lust, putting God to the test, envy, idolatry, contempt for the pleasant land, disbelief, murmuring, license, eating sacrifices to false gods, provoking of Moses, self-will, acquiring sinful works from heathen people.

The worst thing God could have done to them was to do nothing – leave them alone – but He did not ignore them.  They were on His heart, the object of His attention; and consequently He chastened them giving “them into the hand of the heathen” for their good.  In spite of all their sins, He regarded their affliction and remembered His covenant.  They were His children.  And He forgave them when they came back to Him.  Oh! What mercy spared Israel!  A mercy equaled only by the mercy that spares us.”
~ Leroy Brownlow

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away:  for if I go not away, the Comforter will to come unto you, but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.”
John 16:7
