I received a card yesterday from my friend’s daughter. It’s a simple card, with a simple message, and I was touched that she had remembered my husband’s passing. The anniversary was today. The message was, “I care.” “Thought you might need a little extra love this week.” Those words meant so much to me! I’m very sentimental, and keep those things which have special meaning to me. I remember them, and keep them in my heart. I have framed that card so that I may see those words every day.
On my refrigerator door is advice given me by a faithful servant of God. The best advice I have ever been given, and is a reminder every day. It has been imprinted on my heart. It has been said, “Words are what men live by…..words they say and mean.” ….and if you look back on your life, I believe that you will find the same. Little words: God, faith, love, joy, Bible, honor, home. Little words that are cherished in our hearts.
We are told in Scripture to edify one another. The two instances mentioned above are examples of edifying one another. I have noticed that when I feel the lowest, a faithful brother or sister will come along and cheer my heart, and I am once again encouraged. God’s providence? I don’t know.
An encouraging word, a warm smile, a note, a hug. So simple, and yet so uplifting! They lift us up, and strengthen us to carry on. At times we think it is a little thing, but when we look back at how kind and uplifting words from a friend made us feel, they turn out to be much bigger than we thought. “Little” kindnesses make a huge difference in our day to day lives.
“Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.” I Peter 3:8
We are told in Scripture to edify one another.
“But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13
“Let us therefore follow after things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” Romans 14:19
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
II Thessalonians 5:11
…..and we find that when we cheer another, it cheers us too. That personal touch encourages us, and makes our hearts glad again. “It’s the little things which keep the world shining – little beams by day and little twinkles by night.”
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” Proverbs 17:22
May we all keep in remembrance “the little things” that make a big difference in others lives.
“I look around the room and can’t help but think about how it is the little things we look back on in life. I wonder how often people think that they should pay more attention to them.”
