The subject of repentance came up again this week, but out of the unlikeliest of places. Earlier this week I had trouble on social media regarding this subject and the article that the man wrote. I teach a Bible class on Lord’s day for 2nd – 5th graders. After having studied our lesson for the morning, I then go over the names of the apostles, the five acts of worship and their meaning, and the steps to becoming a Christian. Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, Baptism, Remain Faithful, and Teach Others.
While discussing repentance, a little girl, fourth grader, told me that earlier the evening before, she had borrowed one of her friend’s bracelets, but during the evening the bracelet was caught in the car door and was lost. They could not find it. She then told me that she called her friend and told her of the mishap. I asked what her response was to the loss of the bracelet. She said that her friend was a little angry with her. I then asked what she was going to do to resolve the matter. She said that she was going to try to find a bracelet just as the one she borrowed, but if she was unable to do that, she would give her the money or a gift card. She is doing that which is right in His eyes. She made amends and will within her ability restore the bracelet or the value of the item. This was a great example of repentance.
“But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went.”
Matthew 2:28-29
“Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a Godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”
II Corinthians 7:9-10
“And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; andif I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.” Luke 19:8
“Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.”
I Samuel 12:3
“And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord; that it may be well with thee.”
Deuteronomy 6:18
“Right is the measure of civilization’s progress. Every step of progress has been from right to right; and every retrogression has been from wrong to wrong. Right is the solution to the problem; wrong is the problem.”
