“Hold fast to the Bible. To the influence of this Book we are indebted for all the progress made in true civilization and to this we must look as our guide in the future.”
~ Ulysses S. Grant
What does the Bible do? It …
Lights Our Way: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105
Truth: “Sanctify them through Thy Truth: Thy Word is Truth.” John 17:17
“Buy the Truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” Proverbs 23:23
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32
“Jesus saith unto him, I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father by by Me.” John 14:6
“Pilate therefore said unto Him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the Truth. Every one that is of the Truth heareth My voice. Pilate therefore said unto Him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I Am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the word, that I should bear witness unto the Truth. Every one that is of the Truth heareth My voice. Pilate saith unto Him, What is Truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in Him no fault at all.” John 18:37-38
Sharper than a Two Edged Sword: “For the Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” Hebrews 4:12
Gives Comfort: “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted.” II Corinthians 1:3-4
“Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Counsel: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” Psalm 1:1
“Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.” Proverbs 4:13
“Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” Proverbs 13:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7
“The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.
Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.
It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here too, heaven is opened and the gates of hell disclosed.
Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.
It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgement, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.” ~ Unknown

I know the unknown author, Finis Jennings Dake. We just studied lesson two of His book, God’s Plan for Man. Lesson two is the study oh The Holy Scriptures, with their origin. Your quote is an exact one from this lesson. Wonderful!
Actually, this was recorded on the fly leaf of D. L. Moody’s Bible, So it is older than Dake. Not sure I’d Moody is the originator, but he at least used this quote.
