The fruit of “peace”

Peace

Peace is what grows our patience. Jesus said,

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

The world throws garbage at us all day. People backstab us at work. The news warns of every disease and abomination and war on the planet. We get insulted, stressed out and dumped on. We live in a world of tribulation.

But Jesus opens his cloak and says, “Come in here. It is safe. It is peaceful. In me you will have peace.”

If you want peace in the mess around you, you have to get into Jesus. That isn’t studying about him or offering a prayer to be saved. That means taking off your old flesh and climbing inside the one who is peace. That happens when our faith culminates a new life in the waters of baptism.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Gal. 3:26-27).

When we are in Christ, “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7).

That peace isn’t anything we can adequately define or explain. But it is evident in the fruit we bear. When we have that peace in Christ every life we touch will experience his stillness and peace.

The fruit of the Spirit looks like patience.

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way” (2 Thes. 3:16).
