Knelt beneath the window sill,
With both my eyes and heart quite filled,
I gazed into futurity,
And wondered what it held for me.
It seemed that then a thought was born—
The thought that I was only one,
The thought that all the world through,
A million girls were wondering, too.
It struck me then—life has a goal;
And though I wasn’t very old,
I knew each moment past was gone,
And wasted if not thought upon.
The idea that occurred to me
Was that a girl is like a tree;
Whatever shape it’s blown when young
Will be the figure it becomes.
And every thought I might allow—
The things I did and dreamed of now—
The vanities I deemed as fun,
Would build the woman I’d become.
