When God Shows Up in a Honey Bun

Psalm 96:4 “For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised…” ESV

With my to-do list complete, this routine day was coming to a close. Then the phone shattered my peace. The message hurled at me from the other end of the line made no sense, but the words “life-flighted” took my breath away.

We sped off without thought to locking the house. How was it possible our 6-year-old grandson was in an evac helicopter, unresponsive and in route to the closest trauma hospital? Frightened of the news we would receive upon arrival, I instinctively immersed myself in fervent prayer.

Praying scripture had long been my habit and I found soul-soothing peace in Psalm 96:4. I craved that reminder of how great a God I served. And now, with every breath, I begged for a piece of His mighty power on behalf of my grandson.

Our family gathered, attempting to make sense of the doctors’ report. There were serious head injuries, but the doctors assured us when falling twenty feet onto concrete, these were to be expected.

Now, we must wait. And wait. And wait some more.

As word spread, church family began arriving at the hospital. In a most humbling display of love and trust in an almighty God, our waiting room turned into a powerful army of prayer warriors lifting up our grandson’s name to The Great I Am. Casting our cares upon a God who adored this sweet boy more than our humanness ever could, allowed a precious peace to fill the room.

Difficult days followed. Numerous visitors came bearing gifts, but the child remained unresponsive to them all; that is, until a honey bun showed up.

Yes, a honey bun!

Aware of our grandson’s obsession for honey buns, one of his little friends came bearing one. For the first time since the tragedy, my grandson’s eyes lit and the corner of his mouth turned up ever so slightly in what we immediately interpreted to be the greatest smile ever known to mankind!

As tears filled my eyes, a little boy of long ago came to mind. This child in Mark 6 gave a seemingly insignificant offering of five loaves and two fish. Through his small, edible gift, many souls witnessed the power of a mighty God and came to believe in the deity of Christ.

I was immediately struck with awe, realizing my privilege to witness this loaves-and-fishes moment. Through the offering of a simple honey bun, God had once again shown his mighty power and no one in that room overlooked the majesty of our loving Father.

Sisters, we occasionally need reminders that “our impossible” is “God’s everyday routine.” Throughout history, God often demonstrated his greatness through the small, ordinary elements of life. He saved a nation through a baby in a basket, He conquered the enemy with a rock in a young boy’s sling, He spoke through the mouth of a donkey, and now for us, He showed up in a sweet honey bun. Only our mighty God can display such greatness through such simplicity.

Father God, we praise you for your greatness.
