An essay on meanness
Bible verses about meanness
MEANNESS
Donald R. Fox
Over thirty years ago we moved to our present home site. It was country living with an old twisty road and with very few people living here. When someone drove on this twisting road, they were either lost or lived within this area. Now we are part of the town of Saltillo, Mississippi. Many nice houses in well-developed sub-divisions spot this area. However, the old country road still has remained the same, twisted, quiet and pitch black at night.
From time-to-time some mean unruly lawless individuals scatter broken glass on the road. Why would anyone want to do this? The only answer I can come up with is meanness. Meanness is defined in part as, “The desire to cause pain for the satisfaction of doing harm." A few synonyms would be “hatefulness, maliciousness, nastiness, spitefulness and viciousness." For someone to do hateful malicious acts so to bring on individual satisfaction is wicked evilness. Sadly, our world is full of such people.
Do mean folks stop at putting glass on the street to cause a car tire blowout or the like? I don’t know the answer because there are degrees to such meanness. Was it kids who thought they would get a laugh at this mischief? Was it to them just a prank? We know not the answer. All we know is there was glass on the street, and this is wrong. Some are without standards and knowing nor caring not that which is right or wrong.
KINDNESS GIVES MORE SATISFACTION THAN MEANNESS
“For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.” (Isaiah 54:10 KJV)
“Abhor that which is evil, cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;” (Romans 12:9-10 KJV)
“Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness.” (George Sand 1804-1876)
